This has been a really hot topic nowadays, specially in countries like Portugal, Spain and France where a lot of people are fighting to end bullfights and other are fighting to keep it. Well i had to make a sketch out of it and here is Oscar the bull. But i dont want to blend on this fight, so this sketch takes no parties!
I can explain why i dont want to blend; my problem is that rationally i understand the activists that are against bullfights, but my heart tells me another thing. You see i was born and educated in a place where people vibrate when the see a bull and a man in the arena, i am not going to try to defend that by using stupid arguments as "tradition" and so on, tradition is a fantastic thing, but some are obsolet and dont make sense in our days, so there is no argument i can use to defend it. But sometimes i ask a question to myself; "Where lays the bar that defines cruelty? " a bull is a magnific animal and bullfights are cruel, but i just think that sometimes we kind of decide that somethings are wrong and some that still wrong are ok. Tell me what is the diference between a bull and a rabbit or a grouse that are hunted every year for a sport sake? Or even the chicken that we love to eat in our burgers, that had a miserable life in a cage, being overfeed to only one propose, to be eaten in the end? and i could go on now for pages and pages of "acceptable" animal cruelty, but i dont have the time or energy for that, the point is how funny is that we close our eyes to so many things that are wrong, in many cases cause they give us some kind of profit.
The bull at least had a nice life until the day he had to go to the arena.
If they stop bullfights all over the world i am not going to oppose them, to be honest i can see the right in it, but then i hope they stop a whole lot of other things that we accepted as right!

Rabbits, grouses and other hunted animals are usually killed in the spot, if they're not then they will get I a short amount of time, where bullfights are basically torture of the animal until it gets killed. I come from a place, very near you, so the tradition and the growing up with it also has an impact on me, but then again I think it's wrong. Just an opinion.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you, and that is why i said more than once that i can see the right on stoping bullfights! Maybe you are right about hunted animals, but chickens, pigs and cows that we buy everyday in our supermarkets are tortured by far for a longer time than a bull on a arena. dont get me wrong, but it was just a reflexion about how some things are just accepted naturally, while others make a huge fuzz on our society!

Well i have to say that cruelity in my opinion comes toghetr with bussines.. When u leave the fellings apart and only the profit is the main reason... I learn with my grand f and my uncle Ze Correia that we hunting is walk the fields feel the nature and wait for the lunch time glass of wine and linguica :-D u cant translate really linguica.... hoppe in the end of the day go back home full of good vibes and not full of blood.. Chico, mete lá este meu comentário em inglês porque eu tive dificuldade em raciocinar sobre algo tão sensível numa língua estrangeira. Eu acho que as touradas não serão menos recrimináveis do que a caça e mais do que recrimináveis chega a ser gritante que se rotule a primeira como festa e a segunda como desporto. Acho mesmo que só falta declararem os dias de tourada como feriados como fazem com o natal, a páscoa e o ano novo e promover a caça a desporto olímpico ao lado da maratona e da ginástica artística. A grande diferença entre ambas é que um touro dá luta e jogam com isso mas não poderiam fazer o mesmo com um coelho ou uma perdiz mas em ambas as actividades o homem pratica a sua pontaria...Já a criação de animais para consumo não levantará tanta polémica porque o objectivo é de tão somente obter carne e como tal os meios para o atingir apesar de condenáveis não causam a mesma indignação. Se chegaremos a um ponto em que o homem se tornará herbívoro, ou arranjará um substituto equivalente à carne em termos não só nutritivos mas de paladar não sei mas parece-me que a acontecer será num futuro muito distante pois isso já seria interferir com questões de base. Agora, que é urgente começar por modificar as condições em que os bichos se criam, que é algo bem mais fácil, isso é. Agora, eu acho que quem é sensível em relação a um destes assuntos, é sensível a todos. As touradas é que vêm sempre à baila porque são transmitidas nos canais generalistas(ao contrário da caça que dá nos temáticos) e da criação de animais que não dá de todo...E depois, na tourada compram-se bilhetes para assistir não à matança mas à tortura de um animal. É algo perpetuado. Se as touradas forem abolidas, abre-se a porta à abolição de muitas coisas. Haverão sempre umas coisas que por um motivo ou por outro causam maior indignação e erguem mais vozes do que outras.O importante é que se aproveite essa onda para começar por algum lado ou estavas à espera que fosse tudo de uma vez?...O facto de haver outras coisas igualmente erradas foi sempre um dos principais argumentos para não se emendar a que por algum motivo estava na mesa e a consequência disso foi a perpetuação de todas elas.
